Frequently Asked Questions

Boiler Service Questions

What areas do you cover?

We cover Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan, Cowbridge, Penarth, Dinas Powys, St Athan, Llantwit Major and Bridgend. If you are close to that area and not sure whether we come to you, give us a ring on 02921 258852 and we will confirm.

Are you Gas Safe registered?

Yes. Every engineer working on gas is Gas Safe registered and carries a Gas Safe ID card that you can ask to see at any time. Any work we do on gas appliances, from a service to a landlord safety check, is signed off under our Gas Safe registration.

How long have you been trading?

Hollis Plumbing and Gas Ltd has been trading since 2015 (Companies House 09874398), and owner Edward Hollis has over 22 years of hands-on plumbing, heating and gas engineering experience across Cardiff and South Wales.

What are your opening hours?

Our standard hours are Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:00, with Saturday mornings available for appointments. We do not run a standard Sunday service but we are available for genuine emergency call-outs 24 hours a day.

Do you charge for quotes?

No. We provide free, no-obligation quotes for all our work. Call us on 02921 258852 or send an enquiry through the form and we will come back to you with a clear price.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept card payments, bank transfers and cash. Payment is normally taken on completion of the work for services and small jobs. On larger installations we agree the payment schedule with you before the job starts.

What does the boiler service cover?

The boiler is cleaned and checked to make sure it is in good, safe working order. We inspect the burner, controls, seals and safety devices, run the boiler up under load and confirm everything is operating within the manufacturer's tolerances. If we spot anything that needs attention we let you know before we leave.

Are repairs covered in the price of the service?

No, repairs are not covered by the £90 service price. If we find something during the service that needs repair we will explain what is required and give you a separate quote before doing any additional work.

How much does a boiler service cost?

A standard boiler service is a fixed £90. That includes the full clean, safety inspection and any documentation you need afterwards.

How often should I service my boiler?

Once a year is the sensible interval, and it is what most manufacturers require to keep the boiler warranty valid. Booking in through autumn ahead of winter is a good rhythm.

Which boiler brands do you service?

We service all major brands including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Alpha, Ideal and Glowworm. If you are not sure what brand you have, tell us the model number when you book and we will confirm.

Do you carry out landlord gas safety checks on other appliances?

Yes. The £75 landlord gas safety check covers the gas fire, gas hob and boiler in the same property, all done in one visit for one set price. If your property has a different combination of appliances, tell us when you book and we will confirm the price before we arrive.

Is a landlord gas safety check a legal requirement?

Yes. Every rental property in the UK with a gas appliance must have a valid Landlord Gas Safety Certificate (CP12), renewed every 12 months, issued by a Gas Safe registered engineer. As a landlord you are legally responsible for arranging it.

How quickly can you issue a CP12 certificate?

We issue the CP12 on the day of the inspection. It is emailed straight to you (or your lettings agent) once the check is signed off, so you have the paperwork on record straight away.

Do you work with lettings agents?

Yes. We work with several lettings agents across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. We can liaise directly with the tenant to book access and send the certificate straight to the agent, which keeps the paperwork clean.

What happens if an appliance fails the safety check?

If we find a fault that makes an appliance unsafe we will explain what is wrong, isolate the appliance if needed, and quote separately for the repair. You always have a choice of whether to go ahead with the repair or arrange it elsewhere.

How much does a new boiler cost?

We quote every boiler install with a free survey rather than a rate card, because the right price depends on the boiler size, brand, warranty length and any system upgrades. Typical domestic swaps in South Wales are in the £2,000 to £3,500 range supplied and fitted. Call 02921 258852 to book a survey and we will give you a fixed price.

Which boiler brands do you install?

We install premium brands including Vaillant, Worcester Bosch, Baxi and Alpha. The right pick depends on the property size, warranty length and how you use hot water. We explain the trade-offs during the free survey and recommend the option that actually suits you.

How long does a boiler install take?

A straightforward like-for-like swap is normally one to two days on site. Full system changes, converting from a conventional to a combi, or fitting a system boiler with a new cylinder can take longer. We give you a clear timeline as part of the quote.

Do you remove the old boiler?

Yes. Safe disposal of the old boiler is included in every install. You do not need to arrange anything separately, and we leave the property tidy at the end of the job.

Do new boilers come with a warranty?

Yes. All new boilers we install come with manufacturer-backed warranties, typically five to ten years depending on brand and model. We register the warranty in your name so the cover is active from day one.

Are heat pumps worth it in South Wales?

Air source heat pumps work well in the UK climate as long as the property is properly insulated and the pump is sized correctly for the house. In an insulated home they can significantly reduce running costs versus gas. If the property is poorly insulated we will tell you honestly rather than push the install.

Are there grants available?

Yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) offers a grant towards the cost of an air source heat pump for eligible domestic properties in England and Wales. We discuss eligibility and paperwork during the free survey and help you understand what applies.

Do I need bigger radiators for a heat pump?

Sometimes. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than gas boilers, so larger radiators or underfloor heating help the system deliver enough heat to each room. The heat-loss survey tells us which radiators, if any, need upgrading.

How noisy are heat pumps?

Modern units are quiet, typically in the 40-50 dB range at the outdoor unit. Siting them properly (away from bedroom windows and neighbouring boundaries) keeps them unobtrusive. We look at siting as part of the survey.

Do you also service and repair heat pumps?

Yes. We service and repair air source heat pumps on an ongoing basis, not just install them. Annual servicing keeps the pump running efficiently and protects the manufacturer warranty.

Wet or electric underfloor heating?

Wet (water-based) systems are usually the better choice for whole-room or whole-house coverage and are cheaper to run over time. Electric systems are quicker to retrofit and make sense for single rooms, especially bathrooms. We recommend which fits your project during the survey.

Can I have underfloor heating with my existing boiler?

Yes in most cases. Standard gas combi and system boilers can supply an underfloor heating loop with the right controls. If any changes to the boiler or hot water setup are needed we flag them during the survey and quote them up front.

How long does underfloor heating take to install?

A single-room electric underfloor system can often be fitted in a day or two. A whole-house wet system takes longer and needs to be coordinated with the flooring and screed work. We give you a full timeline with the quote.

Can underfloor heating replace radiators?

In a properly insulated property, yes. Wet underfloor heating can be the primary heat source for a whole home, especially alongside a heat pump. In a poorly insulated older property, underfloor may work best as supplementary heating for kitchens, bathrooms and extensions.

Is underfloor heating expensive to run?

Wet underfloor heating is usually cheaper to run than radiators once the system reaches temperature, because it operates at lower flow temperatures across a larger surface area. Electric underfloor is more expensive to run per kWh, which is why it makes more sense for small rooms.

Do you do the whole bathroom or just the plumbing?

Both. Some customers want us to run the whole project (plumbing, tiling, building work and finishing). Others want us to handle the gas and plumbing work alongside their own builder and tiler. Either way we coordinate cleanly so the sequence is right.

How long does a bathroom fit take?

A straightforward like-for-like refit is normally one to two weeks. Wetrooms, moved plumbing runs, or bigger renovations take longer. We give you a realistic timeline as part of the fixed-price quote.

Can you supply the suite as well?

Yes. We can supply the bathroom suite, tiles and fittings through our trade suppliers, or you can supply your own and we fit them. If you supply your own we still quote a fixed price for the fit and coordinate the delivery timing.

Do I need my boiler upgraded for a new bathroom?

Not always. If the existing boiler comfortably runs the new bathroom (and any other outlets you use at the same time) it stays. If it does not, we flag it up front, price the upgrade into the quote, and give you the choice rather than surprise you mid-project.

Do you install wetrooms?

Yes. Wetrooms need the drainage, tanking (waterproofing) and tiling done properly to avoid leaks, so we take extra care with the tanking layer and the tile falls. We can either run the whole wetroom project or work alongside your builder.
